Greetings Infomaniacs,

From all the comments I received regarding yesterday’s
footwear column, it looks like I am not the only one who has
trouble finding comfortable shoes. Many of you sent along
shoes that have helped you, and I really appreciate your
input. Since I’m sure there are other readers with the same
problem, I thought I would include a few of your comments…

I discovered a line of shoes that are American made a few
years ago and wished someone had told me about them earlier.
They are quite costly, but worth every penny. The company is
Allen Edmonds. Try them and see if you don’t agree.
–Max

I just wanted to write to you in response to your concern
about finding shoes that don’t kill your feet.  Might I
offer two suggestions…look into MBT (Masai Barefoot
Technology)…shoes are INCREDIBLE!!  Very comfortable. Yes,
I do speak from personal experience.  The other thought I
have is I’ve heard wonderful things about The Good Feet
Store.  The latter takes a very accurate mold of your foot
and makes some kind in sole which you can then place into
any shoe for ultimate comfort.  Rest assured, as I’m reading
this I realize I’m sounding like a virtual commercial/
advertisement.  For that, I apologize.  That’s not my intent.
I merely want to help if I could.  In any event, good luck
on your future shoe comfort endeavors.
–Rhoda

Melissa, I feel your pain.  I also have wide feet and a low
arch.  To top it all off I also have a very small heel, so
most arch supports hit me right at the top of the arch instead
of the middle.  I usually get my shoes online at Footsmart.com.
You should try them out.  Nice, pretty shoes.  Some can be
pricey but if it fits and is comfortable then its worth it.
–Linda

I have had the same problem.  Wide feet.  Check out Easy
Spirits.  I have been wearing them for years.  They have
everything from sneakers to pumps, boots, sandals.
–Marie

Talking about shoes, in my opinion Clark shoes are the most
comfortable shoes you can buy.  I own about 100 pairs of
shoes and I always choose to wear the Clarks and leave the
other 90 pair in the closet!! I just started buying Clarks
about 5 years ago and now I don’t buy anything else. They
don’t make high heeled dress shoes however so I can’t help
you on that aspect as I don’t wear any dressy heels.
–DJN

Have you ever tried Dansko?  I don’t know how the width
would go over, but the arch support is great!  I wear them
every day…
They have historically made clogs, but they now have many
styles.
–PDD
Thank you again for your very helpful suggestions…
definitely worth checking out!

Enjoy!
Melissa

                  RANDOM TIDBITS – Sneakers

In the late 18th century, people wore rubber soled shoes
called plimsolls. Around 1892, the U.S. Rubber Company came
up with more comfortable rubber sneakers with canvas tops,
called Keds.

                             ***

Sneakers earned their nickname because they were so quiet,
a person wearing them could sneak up on someone.

                             ***

In 1924, a German man named Adi Dassler created a sneaker
that he named after himself: Adidas. This brand became the
most popular athletic shoe in the world.

James Dean in sneakers in the popular movie Rebel Without
a Cause.
